Halloween shopping trends show that candy is the top item for most consumers. 80% of celebrators plan to include it on their shopping lists. A new Numerator report confirms that candy remains the most popular purchase as shoppers prepare for Halloween 2024.
Where Are Shoppers Buying Halloween Candy?
Big box retailers like Walmart and Target are central to Halloween shopping trends, with 60% of shoppers planning to make their purchases there. Other popular options include traditional grocery stores (44%), online retailers (35%), specialty stores like Hobby Lobby and Spirit Halloween (18%), and local shops (15%).
Gen Z and Millennials Drive Halloween Celebrations
The Numerator survey of 5,000 U.S. consumers also highlighted that 62% of respondents plan to celebrate Halloween. Leading the charge are younger generations, with 73% of Gen Z and Millennial respondents excited for Halloween festivities this year.
Decorations and Candy Lead Halloween Purchases
In line with current Halloween shopping trends, 59% of respondents plan to decorate their homes this year, reusing decorations they already own (83%), while 46% will buy new décor. Candy tops the list of purchases, followed by decorations, costumes, food, and party supplies.
Other Popular Halloween Activities
In addition to candy shopping, 58% of respondents plan to hand out treats to trick-or-treaters. Family and friend gatherings are also popular, with 33% planning to celebrate together, while 31% expect to go trick-or-treating or accompany someone who is.
Top Halloween Purchases for 2024
Candy takes the top spot with 80% of shoppers, followed by Halloween decorations (48%), food (38%), costumes and apparel (37%), alcoholic beverages (23%), and party supplies (14%).
With candy, costumes, and decorations on everyone’s minds, Halloween 2024 is shaping up to be a fun-filled celebration for many!
